Big the Cat confirmed for Sonic Prime in new teaser

Another month, another miniscule snippet of footage for Netflix’s upcoming Sonic Prime series. This one’s a whole fifteen seconds long; which might bring us up to maybe a half-minute total? Wow! Keep it up, lads, and at this rate by Christmas we might have a third of the trailer in our hands! All joking aside, each teaser has, in fairness, revealed something new. In the first, we met this series’ incarnation of Sonic (as voiced by Deven Mack, doing such an alarmingly on-point Roger Craig Smith impersonation that one wonders why they couldn’t have just cast Roger again), looking lifted directly from a fan SFM animation.

In the second, Shadow himself put in an appearance, gruffly not speaking a word. And now, in the third boney scrap that’s been tossed to us, we’re introduced to another of the Sonicverse’s wide cast of characters: the ever-memeworthy Big the Cat. Yes. We’re seeing Big before Tails, Amy or Knuckles. What a timeline.

I’ve always found Big’s ears to be oddly grotesque.

Discounting his cameo-at-best turns in Sonic X, this will mark the fishing feline’s first major appearance in a Sonic cartoon, and he looks pretty much as expected in CGI form. In the trailer, the Blue Blur zips by through the GMod environment, apologising to the purple beefcake for almost running into him, and acknowledging his amphibious sidekick Froggy before departing. Big is quite audibly not being played by any of his usual actors, and it remains to be seen how he’ll be used in the show. Comic relief? Meme fodder? Axiomatic to the lore? Anyone’s guess at this point.

Either way, if there isn’t a ‘something’s biting’ reference, or a few bars of the fish-catching theme from Sonic Adventure being played, I’ll be most displeased. You hear me, Netflix? I’m watching you on this.

How do you feel about Big the Cat’s inclusion? Any other characters you’d like to see? Let us know!
