One of the biggest concerns about the first digital EVO event has got to be online connectivity. Within the tournament rules update that went into effect March 18th it now states the following:
“For best connectivity, players must be using a wired internet connection to the modem that connects a player’s home network to the internet. Due to unstable match connectivity, some internet service providers cannot be used for tournament play.”
At the time of the writing of this article, EVO Staff has not released the list of “banned” ISPs. However, after speaking with staff in the EVO Discord they have assured that this is only in effect for some regions in Asia.
Back in March EVO was purchased by Sony after the whirlwind of a year that was 2020. This power-play forced Microsoft and Nintendo out of the picture, as the Sony Era of Evo begins in a few days. Previously, ESPN 2 had the exclusive television broadcasting rights for the EVO 2016 and 2017 Street Fighter V Top 8. As a result, only 200,000 people watched on cable television. Why was it so low? Because the fans of EVO that knew about it, watched it on Twitch instead. People are waiting for the all-clear to get back to in person events. Who knows when that will be, but I will be watching.
