MegaDriver releases new Sonic tribute album, MetalHog 2.0

If you know anything about video game cover bands, you should know the greatness of Brazilian heavy metal band MegaDriver. For years, these guys have been covering the best of video game music with their signature metal spin.

From the early classics like Gyruss and Altered Beast, to newer games like Warcraft and Duke Nukem, MegaDriver has gone through the whole spectrum of game music. Being big fans of SEGA (even going as far as having a SEGA Genesis guitar),  it’s only natural for MegaDriver to cover some SEGA music, Sonic the Hedgehog included.

Back in 2008 MegaDriver had released their first Sonic related album, titled MetalHog, to great success. Now, they’re releasing a follow-up this week, titled MetalHog 2.0 to celebrate Sonic’s 25th anniversary.

The new album features 17 tracks, many from the original album that have been re-recorded and remastered, in addition to some entirely new songs thrown in to celebrate the occasion, like instrumental covers of “City Escape,” “Sonic Boom” and an entirely new vocal song based on Scrap Brain Zone from the SMS Sonic.

MetalHog-frontAs of right now, the album is available for purchase on a couple different digital stores,  like Amazon and Google play, as well as iTunes and Spotify.  MegaDriver will also be releasing a free download version on their site June 23rd, which is Sonic’s 25th anniversary. You can preview the album and find where to buy it here, but the band will make the album completely free beginning on June 23, which is, of course, Sonic’s 25th anniversary.

From what I’ve heard so far, MegaDriver fans won’t be disappointed, and the album includes some unexpected tracks that sound great in their awesome style. You can always count on these guys to provide great covers in a heavy metal sound that just begs to headbang while listening to.

Their Sonic covers were great in the first place, and the remasters sound even better than the originals, with an extra punch.

You can follow them on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube!
