About Tactics Ogre

The Tactics Ogre series dates back to 1993 when the first game, titled Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, released in Japan for Super Famicon. Two years later, North American players got their first taste of this classic tactical role-playing game.

Also in 1995, Japanese players got the game’s sequel Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. The Japanese exclusive title also debuted on Super Famicon before receiving a North American port for the Sony PlayStation in 1998. The sequel introduced a new isometric perspective, turn-based battles, detailed pixel art and a deep, branching story with multiple endings.

The blending of genres between RPG and strategy, paired with the branching story arcs helped land the game a massive cult following over the years. However, apart from the revamped and critically successful 2010 PSP remake of Let Us Cling Together, the series lied dormant for years.

That is, until now.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn storms out this November!

The new reimagining of Tactics Ogre builds further on the 2010 remake in a number of ways. Visually, the game will retain the pixel art illustrations but with an HD polish. In addition, Square Enix completely revamped the user interface to make information easier to understand and implement streamlined controls.

Apart from visuals, Tactics Ogre: Reborn also features completely redesigned sound. One of the most notable additions is the inclusion of voice acting that breathes new life and emotional complexity into the narrative’s dialogue. Additionally, players can choose between both English and Japanese voices, as the game’s dialogue features full voice acting for both languages.

HD pixel art and fully-voiced dialogue

Apart from voice acting, other sound improvements include sound effects and score. In fact, composer Hitoshi Sakimoto recorded the entire game’s soundtrack with a live orchestra.

Other quality of life improvements include overhauled gameplay mechanics. For example, Square Enix completely redesigned the battle system to include unit-by-unit levels. Each unit advances differently depending on its class to give players more freedom in combining equipment, skills and magic for each unit.

In addition, the enemy AI received improvements as well. Enemies can now change tactics depending on the layout of the battlefield and current state of battle. This makes it more challenging, as you too will need to adapt your plans as your enemies approach conflict differently on the fly.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn launches physically and digitally on November 11, 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can also pre-order the game here.
