Three new SEGA Genesis games head to Nintendo Switch Online

Three more Genesis classics join Nintendo Switch Online!

Since the Online Expansion Pack debuted for Switch, Nintendo built an impressive library of classic N64 and SEGA Genesis classics. Now, three more Genesis titles made their way to Nintendo Switch Online. Players can now enjoy Super Fantasy Zone, Alien Soldier and Light Crusader.

For some players, this means the opportunity to replay classic games from your child hood. While to others, this may be the first time you’ve ever heard of these three games. Regardless of where you stand, here’s everything you need to know about the three newest additions to the Genesis library on Nintendo Switch Online.

Super Fantasy Zone

Super Fantasy Zone

The first game added to Switch Online, Super Fantasy Zone, is a shooter where players must fight to avenge their father and defeat the evil Dark Menon. Developed by Sunsoft and published by SEGA, the game originally debuted in 1992 for the Mega Drive in Japan and Europe. It wouldn’t be until 2008 when the last addition to the Fantasy Zone series finally made its way to North America through Nintendo’s Virtual Console.

Gameplay consists of a variety of levels where players must shoot and destroy all the Enemy Generators. Once players clear every Enemy Generator, they must defeat a boss known as a Menon Guardian. Players must also collect gold coins throughout the levels by defeating enemies to upgrade weapons and equipment.

Alien Soldier

Alien Soldier

As the name implies, in Alien Soldier players take on the role of an extraterrestrial warrior who must defeat 25 bosses. The side scrolling action game was developed by Treasure and published by SEGA. It first launched for the Genesis in 1995.

Throughout this run and gun title, players will face hordes of enemies that are simple enough to blast through. Instead, however, it’s the game’s epic boss fights that really challenge players’ mastery. The game also offers many interesting mechanics, including a deadly move called “Phoenix Force” that allows you to dash across the screen and devastate your foes.

Light Crusader

Light Crusader

The final Genesis game Nintendo recently added to Switch Online is Light Crusader. Another Treasure title from 1995, this game blends RPG and action platformer gameplay into one interesting game. Players take on Sir David as he travels through various dungeons to find the townspeople who went missing from Green Row.

The game features an isometric perspective and offers a variety of action mechanics. You’ll need to master a range of skills from slashing down creatures with your sword to combining the four magic elements. In addition, the game incorporates various puzzles you’ll need to solve to advance and save the kidnapped townspeople.
